The lifting of the boiler at Crewe

  • The steam pipes, blast pipe and petticoat have been removed, prior to lifting the boiler
  • Now that the smokebox floor trap door has been removed, you can see the front of the middle engine
  • This is where the steam pipe to the fireman's side engine used to fit. The cover is to stop debris falling in, and damaging the valve.
  • Various removed bits, including the petticoat.
  • The smokebox door, and the three steam pipes
  • The front half of the boiler has started to rise.
  • The rear end of the boiler isn't entirely free of the ashpans, yet
  • The grate has been partially dismantled. It is much easier to wait until the boiler has been removed, before getting the parts out.
  • The front end of the boiler has risen quite a way
  • The lifting chains are very substantial
  • Some small modifications are made to the ashpans, to free them from the boiler
  • The front end of the boiler has risen, again
  • The rear end of the boiler is now free of the ashpans
  • The whole boiler is very well balanced
  • The boiler is moved sideways
  • The boiler is ready to be lowered on to wooden blocks
  • The boiler is lowered on to wooden blocks
  • The saddle, showing the accumulation of debris under the smokebox
  • The frames, after removal of the boiler, including the remains of the grate in the ashpans
  • The boiler will have to be moved, again, so the lifting chains are left in position
  • The remains of the grate are still in the ashpans. It will be much easier to remove them, now that the boiler has gone.
  • The boiler and frames, side by side
  • The driver's visibility has been improved by the removal of the boiler
  • The boiler sits alongside the frames
  • Let's hope that we can remember which bit goes where
