Progress on Clan Line at Crewe at the end of September 2015

  • All the cladding and lagging have been removed, and a start has been made on removing the foundation ring
  • Good progress is being made on burning out the rivets, so that the foundation ring can be taken out
  • The dome cover has been removed
  • The regulator has been taken out
  • The regulator trays go round the regulator, and are intended to lessen the chance of picking up the water
  • The front tubeplate, seen from the smokebox, after the tubes and flues have been removed
  • The inside of the boiler barrel, showing the main steampipe, the feed to the manifold, and some of the roof stays
  • The front tubeplate, seen from inside the boiler barrel. The main steampipe is at the top, and the clacks are on the right. You can see the normal water level from the tide mark.
  • The front of the rear tubeplate, showing some of the boiler stays
  • The firebox crown, showing some of the roof stays. The rod on the right is the regulator control rod.
  • The inside of the main steam pipe, taken from the position of the regulator
  • Looking forward inside the boiler barrel, the pipe in the top right is the main steam pipe. You can tell how high the water usually is from the marks on the barrel.
  • Entry is gained via the dome. The safety valves are at the bottom of the picture, and you can see where they originally were further forward.
  • You can see the manifold, and one of the remaining pieces of the crinoline.
  • The bogey has been removed, and is in the process of being dismantled
  • The frames are, temporarily, on accommodation bogeys, so that they can be moved outside for thorough cleaning
  • The view inside a cylinder, after the piston has been removed
  • The eccentric rod for the middle engine is connected to this
  • Cylinder and valve covers
  • The driving wheels and Bissell, before they are sent away for new tyres
  • The three removed pistons
  • Lots of the smaller bits that have been taken off the locomotive. How many can you identify?
